Why Counselling?

Counselling can be simply described as a process where through attentive listening and with a disposition of unconditional regard, the counsellor will have a reflective conversation with a client regarding the life-situation or issues they bring to the counselling room in order to gain insight or clarity. There are different approaches to and models of counselling. I personally follow a holistic and wellness approach. I do my best to create a safe environment for my clients where all aspects of being human is addressed: mentally, emotionally, physically, psychologically and spiritually.

Drawing on learnings from Narrative Therapy, I listen carefully to how clients story their lives, and explore with them the dominant social ideas and concepts that became integrated in their life stories. I will always explore tools and practices that can assist a client with what they are working on, including life-style choices, exercise, creativity, spiritual practices and challenging the way they think about their life situations.

Some of the myths about counselling is that it is only something one seeks when you are in a deep crisis, or that it is weak people who can’t cope with life who need counselling. On the contrary, it takes a lot of courage to come to a point to say: I need help; and then make an appointment with a counsellor. You don’t need to reach the depths of a crisis before seeking counselling. Counselling can be more effective when you approach it as a source of self-care and a process that can give guidance and clarity when you reached a point of uncertainty, feeling in limbo or confused about a current life situation. This life situation can be amongst others dissatisfaction with your career path, relationship issues or when you reached a point where you realise there is something more to this life that you are currently living. Something urges you forward to a new pathway or making changes, but you are not certain where to from here. In these situations a few conversations with a counsellor can be very beneficial for your overall wellbeing and reaching clarity.
