At some stage in life, sometimes more often than once, we might reach a point where we ask: Is there more to life? Am I living my fullest potential? Am I happy? It is not necessarily a space where we feel lost or in a crisis, but a transitional time in our lives where we do introspection and evaluate our lives as well as the choices we made. Counselling can be very helpful at this stage.
The counselling process is not and should not be only problem focused. In the holistic and wellness approach to counselling that I follow, the focus would be on what a client needs in order to come to full Body-, Mind- and Spirit integration. When a client comes with these questions as described above, we will fully investigate all aspects of a client’s life that contributes to a sense of wholeness and happiness. This will include exploring the client’s internal resources like learned skills, knowledges, and gifts like creativity. We will also explore external resources like supportive relationships.
Regarding career path, we will investigate the client’s personal goals and dreams. We will give attention to the physical dimension and how to better care for the body through amongst others exercise and proper nutrition. The spiritual dimension will also receive attention, including spiritual practices like meditation that supports and overall sense of wellbeing and integration. Where appropriate, readings, tasks and practices can be suggested to help motivate the client and support their journeys to full integration, living their full potential and be happy.
