Whether you are working in a corporate environment or self-employed, the demands in the work environment have become excessive in our modern society. There is constant pressure to reach targets and goals, as well as shifts and changes regarding SOP’s, workstreams and projects that seems never-ending, including the pace of work and time intensity of delivery that leaves employees reeling. With so much of work happening online and people working from home since the pandemic, with all the added benefits it entails, it unfortunately also meant that the line between work and personal life became blurred. People are working longer hours, and it is not uncommon to get a sms from the boss at night about something that needs urgent attention before 9:00 the next day. Multi-platform availability became the norm in the workplace.

No wonder that anxiety, chronic fatigue and depression have become some of the major ailments of today’s society. It is not uncommon for employees, especially in managerial positions, to be booked off from work for a few months due to mental illness and chronic fatigue. But one doesn’t have to reach this point. One can learn to navigate the crazy work environment in order to soar and be able to create a work-life balance that supports your wellbeing and create happiness. This is where counselling and coaching can be very beneficial.

The counselling process can help you to evaluate your work environment in terms of opportunities it holds for you for growth and development. Does the environment support your personal goals? If the demands are excessive, how can you learn to manage those demands so that you don’t feel overwhelmed? What needs to be negotiated or can be delegated so that you can manage your time more effectively?

Counselling will also help you to explore what is needed to live a balanced and happy life. What life-style choices, including nutrition and exercise, do you make in order to help you soar in your career path? Do you have a spiritual practice like meditation that can help you regulate your emotions, calm the processes of the mind and support focus? If you find yourself stuck in a toxic work environment, counselling can help you explore alternatives that will be beneficial for your wellbeing. This will include letting go of expectations as well as changing the way you think about and relate to your work environment in order to cope more effectively until an alternative and more supportive work environment is found.
